There's a lot of pressure on you to make your Christmas party spectacular.

But let's get straight to the facts, planning a party is hard, so hard that most people either give up and do something lame around the table get together when they want to hold a fun and amazing party for all their family and friends.

We’re all for awesome parties, and we're even more excited about helping you make yours a reality, so here's everything you need to know and have to make your Christmas party simply unforgettable.

Step 1: Choose a date

Really? This is what you're starting me off with?

Before you stab us with a sharpened peppermint stick, let’s explain.

Unless you're pretty sure all your guests have no other plans for Christmas day, actually placing your party on December 25th is a pretty terrible move. Most people want to spend Christmas with their families and aren't going to want to go out to someone else's party.

December 24th is a no go date too, as most people are too busy preparing for Christmas/ this is the day most of the cooking prep gets done and a host of other last-minute tasks get crossed off their list, needless to say, they are too stressed about their own Christmas to enjoy themselves at your party.

So when are the best days to host your party?

If you want to hold your party before Christmas then December 22nd or 23rd is a very sure bet. They're close enough to Christmas for everyone to be hyped up but in that sweet spot where they've already done the early Christmas tasks like gifts and trees but before the last-minute preps.

If you don't mind hosting it after Christmas, December 26th and 27th are perfect. If you're hosting adults with kids then they will absolutely love you as they get to have some fun during Christmas after stressing over making it a fun time for their kids.

Step 2: Choose a theme

Choosing a theme saves you tons of time on decorations and makes it a lot easier to decide on what games and activities you're going to have in your party.

Your theme can also dictate the type of food you serve, needless to say, take your time choosing your theme.

Step 3: invite your guests

Pretty obvious right?

Good, get all your invites out early so people can set that time aside for your party, plus, you will know who isn't coming so you can plan for the right amounts of guests. You don't want to buy food for 50 people and only have 17 show up, or plan activities for an intimate group and then scramble around trying to entertain a crowd of attendees.

Step 4: Decorate for your party

Your decorations should match with your theme, whether it's a winter wonderland, Santa's grotto vibe, or scary snowmen… you need decorations that fit the theme.

Here's a list of essential decorations to have for your party

• Christmas welcome sign

• Christmas tree

• Snowflakes and other fliers

• Missile toe

• Christmas photo booth frame

How big or subtle your decorations purely depend on you and what kind of party you want to throw.

If it's a more cozy evening with a couple of close friends, then a simple welcome sign, a Christmas tree and a photo booth is really all you need. If you're going for a show stopper, that will probably end up on MTV for how awesome it is, then, you'll definitely want to get a pro planner and tons of decorations, also… Can we get some tickets?

Step 5: Get food for your party

Just like with the decorations, how big you go here is entirely up to you.

If this is your only Christmas event, and you love cooking, then go all out on making a full homemade spread for your guests. But, if you've just spent the last few days stressing over getting Christmas ready for your family, it's perfectly fine ordering some pizza, a couple of snacks, and alcohol for your guests.

Either way, I'm sure they will be more than happy to be there and have some fun.

Step 6: activities and games

It wouldn't be a party without some fun games.

This is one of the biggest parts of the whole event and can really make or break the whole experience.

Here are a few possible fun activities you can use to make your Christmas party an unforgettable event!

Tree decorating contest

Split your party into groups of 3 and have them design the best-looking Christmas tree from your available decorations.

You can either get a few little trees and a ton of decorations so groups can do this at the same time or use a single tree and have everyone take turns. When the decorating is done, have them take a picture of themselves with their tree and your Christmas sign (so everyone knows who put together this awesome event).

Have everyone vote on who was the winner and then give them a small prize or a little crown as kings and queens of Christmas.

Gingerbread making contest

The same vibe as the tree but instead, you'll be decorating pieces of gingerbread and assembling the best house or scene from them. A big bonus is if you can get a gingerbread house welcome sign and have them make their gingerbread houses look similar to your sign.

Host a merry murder mystery

This may seem more like a Halloween event but this is always a big hit.

It's a break from all the Christmas cheer, and carol-singing. Pick a theme, like ‘who killed the elf’, or ‘murder in the north pole’. There are tons of variations available online that you can use as guidance as opposed to making up your own.

Have all your guests get involved and watch everyone have a blast figuring out that the reindeer… oops, said too much.

Scavenger hunt

If you've got the space for it, a scavenger hunt is a pretty awesome activity for every party.

A big bonus way of hosting this is to have the scavenger hunt before the party, leaving little clues across your town (you can ask a couple of nice neighbors and store clerks to help you out). Then your guests bring their items with them when they arrive at your party and the winner gets a prize.

Have an ugly Christmas sweater pageant

Have everyone you invite over to your Christmas party come with an ugly sweater, they don't have to wear it throughout but they should have one handy.

When they get there, have everyone put on their ugly sweaters and strike the cheesiest pose possible with your Christmas sign. The winner of the contest has been crowned the king or queen of Christmas.

This is a little bit of fun to help tie your whole event together, plus, imagine how awesome all your pics are going to be having everyone taking shots with your signs.

Other possible games

We won't be giving out the details as we all know how to play these, but if you don't, give them a quick google search, and you'll find tons of guides on them.

• Holiday Trivia

• Charades

• Karaoke

• Name that tune

• Gift wrapping contest

• Christmas movie marathon

• Cookie Exchange

• Snowball fight

Step 7: make some awesome memories

The absolute most important part

Get your guests together and have fun. Don't worry if things don't go as planned, they rarely ever do, all you need to be concerned with is having a great time with your family and making memories that you’ll cherish forever.
